چکیده

Tokamak has toroidal symmetry and symmetry breaking via application of non-axisymmetric field produces disccipation of toroidal momentum by NTV [1] and produces offset toroidal rotation [2]. Callen explained NTV physics and origin of offset toroidal rotation plainly without impurity [3] and with impurity [4]. For impurity, same toroidal rotation for ion and impurity is assumed in [4], which is not always correct as shown by Kim [5]. I have revisited this subject and found revised formula for offset toroidal rotation [6]. It is shown that offset toroidal rotation of bulk ion originates from poloidal thermal heat flow qi is different from simple Callen’s formula. It is also found that similar magnitude of rotation speed difference between ion and impurity is expected especially in high poloidal beta regime, where plasma current is carried largely by the bootstrap current and is relevant for steady state operation of tokamak.

Observation of peak neoclassical toroidal viscous force in the DIII-D tokamak.

Observation of a theoretically predicted peak in the neoclassical toroidal viscosity (NTV) force as a function of toroidal plasma rotation rate Ω is reported. The NTV was generated by applying n=3 magnetic fields from internal coils to low Ω plasmas produced with nearly balanced neutral beam injection. Locally, the peak corresponds to a toroidal rotation rate Ω(0) where the radial electric fiel...

Physics of Penetration of Resonant Magnetic Perturbations Used for Type I Edge Localized Modes Suppression in Tokamaks

Non-linear reduced MHD modelling of the response of a toroidally rotating plasma on Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs) is presented for DIII-D and ITER typical parameter. The non-linear cylindrical reduced MHD (RMHD) code was adapted to take into account toroidal rotation and plasma braking mechanisms such as resonant braking and the Neoclassical Toroidal Viscosity (NTV). The resonant harmo...

Intrinsic Plasma Rotation Determined by Neoclassical Toroidal Plasma Viscosity in Tokamaks

Intrinsic steady state plasma rotation is important for plasma confinement in ITER, since the momentum input is expected to be small. It is well known that the intrinsicplasma rotation in stellarator is determined by non-ambipolar diffusion due to helical ripple [1]. The non-ambipolar diffusion due to small 3D magnetic perturbation described by theNeoclassical Toroidal plasma Viscosity ...

Effects of 3D Magnetic Perturbations on Toroidal Plasmas

Small 3D magnetic perturbations have many interesting and useful effects on tokamak and quasi-symmetric stellarator plasmas. Plasma transport equations that include these effects, most notably on diamagnetic-level toroidal plasma rotation, have recently been developed. The 3D magnetic perturbations and their plasma effects can be classified according to their toroidal mode number n. Low n non-r...

Resistive Wall Mode Stabilization and Plasma Rotation Damping Considerations for Maintaining High Beta Plasma Discharges in NSTX

Maintaining steady fusion power output at high plasma beta is an important goal for future burning plasmas such as in ITER advanced scenario operation and a fusion nuclear science facility. Research on the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) is investigating stability and control physics to maintain steady high plasma normalized beta with minimal fluctuation. Resistive wall mode (RWM) in...
